Enjoy their National Scenic Byway; Minnesota Highway 16. The Root River and State Bike Trails wind adjacent along the National Scenic Byway.
Day One
Arrive in Preston, the “Trout Fishing Capital” of Minnesota. Located in the “Driftless Area” of the state, Preston is home to hardwood forests, abundant wildlife, and many springs, brooks, and streams. The Fillmore County Fair is held annually at the fairgrounds located in Preston.
10 – 1:00 pm
Visit the National Trout Learning Center. Then shop unique stores in Preston including OMAOLA Antiques & Collectables, Popcorn Alley Antiques, Preston Floral Treasures & More, Uncommon Charm, Pine Tree Apple Orchard, and the Preston Apple and Berry Farm.
1 – 2:00 pm
Grab some lunch at the Branding Iron, Chic’s Pizza, or The Sweet Stop Sandwich Shop.
2 – 5:00 pm
Take a scenic bike ride along the Harmony-Preston Valley State Bike Trail. Or visit Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park. Step back in time with costumed guides at Historic Forestville Pioneer Village. Take a naturalist led tour of the longest cave in Minnesota.
5 – 6:00 pm
Check into the Country Trails Inn & Suites or the Jailhouse Historic Inn Bed & Breakfast, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
6:00 pm
Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Day Two
After breakfast, ride along their National Scenic Byway Minnesota Highway 16 to the historic town of Lanesboro, known as the “Rhubarb Capital” and “Bed & Breakfast Capital” of Minnesota. Stop and enjoy the view at Inspiration Point Scenic Overlook along the way.
10 – 12:30 pm
Tour the Old Order Amish Community with knowledgeable guides from Bluffscape Amish Tours. A variety of handcrafted goods are available for purchase including fresh baked bread and pies, hand-sewn quilts, knotted items, jams and jellies, hand reed baskets, and furniture.
12:30 -1:30 pm
Enjoy lunch at one of the many local restaurants in downtown Lanesboro, such as Pedal Pushers Café.
1:30 – 5:00pm
Shop the many unique stores in Lanesboro. Or bike ride along the Root River State Bike Trail that runs along the Root River. Or canoe, kayak, or tube the cool waters of the Root River.
5 – 6:00 pm
Check into one of several Bed & Breakfasts including the Berwood Hill Inn, Coffee Street Inn, and Historic Scanlan House.
6 -9:00 pm
Select one of Lanesboro’s restaurants for a delicious dinner followed by a live production at the Commonweal Theatre by professional local actors.
