Known as the “Air Capital of the World” Wichita is bound closely to aircraft manufacturing. Tour the Kansas Aviation Museum, housing approximately 40 historically significant aircraft. Some have been fully restored while others are pending restoration. Some especially notable airplanes include: Beech Starship, Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, 1934 Model 73 Stearman Trainer, KC 135E Refueling tanker, and 1927 Laird Swallow. Climb the 1941 control tower for a birds-eye view of the surrounding area. Or, with prior arrangement, investigate the wide-ranging archive of more than 200,000 photographs, documents, books and aviation-related memorabilia. Arrangements can also be made through Go Wichita to tour Hawker Beechcraft – which requires headsets and safety glasses, provided by Go Wichita. Or "Doc” - The B-29 Restoration Project - Originally built at The Boeing Company during World War II, "Doc” was part of a squadron known as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Volunteers are restoring this superfortress to flying condition. When complete it will be one of only a handful of flyable B-29s. 800-288-9424, Ext. 102.
