One of the largest rail museums in the nation, with an amazing collection of 75 pieces of historic rolling stock, highlighted by a Union Pacific Big Boy, the world’s largest steam locomotive, weighing 1.1 million pounds and measuring nearly half a football field in length. Big Boy could consume 20 tons of coal in an hour and move at 70 m.p.h. However, it took an army of machinists, pipe fitters and maintenance workers to keep this behemoth on the rails. Also see Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s WWII command train in the facility’s new 26,000 sq ft Lenfestey Visitor Center. Sited on 33 acres along the Fox River, visitors take a 25-minute tour of the grounds aboard a full-size train. Special Events at the National Railroad Museum are another bonus. Experience activities that you would not expect to find at a railroad Museum. Ride the Polar Express, enjoy live music, or visit a haunted mansion – you can do it all at the National Railroad Museum. Check out the Event Calendar to make all your museum plans today. 920-437-7623 |
